# Funding policies

Vault campaigns use one of two funding policies. The policy is set when the campaign is created and is displayed on the campaign page.

| Policy   | Success condition                                                        | If it fails                               |
| -------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------ | ----------------------------------------- |
| Standard | Reaches 100% of its goal by the deadline.                                | Contributions are automatically refunded. |
| Charity  | Reaches 100% by the deadline, **or** expires at 20% or more of its goal. | Contributions are automatically refunded. |

## Standard campaigns

Standard campaigns are all-or-nothing. The full funding goal must be met by the deadline.

If the goal is reached, the campaign qualifies for fulfillment of its stated purpose. If the deadline passes below 100%, every contribution is automatically refunded.

This is the model most people expect from crowdfunding, and it is the default.

## Charity campaigns

Charity campaigns still display a normal funding goal representing 100%, and reaching that goal before the deadline succeeds normally.

The difference is what happens at expiration. If a charity campaign has not reached 100% when its deadline arrives but has raised at least **20% of its stated goal**, the amount raised qualifies for fulfillment rather than being refunded.

Only a charity campaign that expires below 20% enters the refund path.

The purpose of this exception is to let meaningful funds reach the charitable purpose rather than forcing partial support to be returned. See [Charity campaigns](/campaigns/charity-campaigns.md) for the full explanation and what it means for contributors.

## Check before you contribute

The funding policy determines whether you get your money back if a campaign underperforms. It is shown on every campaign page. Check it before contributing.
